This instrument is a portable
version of a device developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Duck,
North Carolina research center to measure nearshore waves. A central controller
simultaneously records pressure readings from an wired array of pressure
sensors that can be up to 1000 feet distant from the controller. The instrument
can run on internal batteries for up to one month, or can be semipermanently
installed with a power/data cable run to shore.
